          Aloysius de Gonzaga's Biography

          Italian saint, an aristocrat by birth who became a member of the Society of Jesus. While still a student at the Roman College, he died as a result of caring for the victims of a serious epidemic, just before midnight on 21 June 1591 at age 23. He was beatified in 1605 and canonized in 1726. “Aloysius” is the Latin form of Aloysius de Gonzaga’s given name in Italian, “Luigi.” The German version of the name is “Alois”. In French, he is called “Louis de Gonzague”.
