          August Weismann's Biography

German biologist, best known as the originator of the germ-plasma theory of heredity, formerly called the doctrine of Weismannism. His writings include “The Germ-Plasm,” 1892-93 and “Essays Upon Heredity and Kindred Biological Problems,” 1891-92.
Weismann taught zoology at the University of Freiburg from 1866-1912, and through his zoological research on the embryology of insects and crustaceans, he proved the falseness of the belief that characteristics acquired during a lifetime can be transmitted to that individual’s offspring.
          He died 11/06/1914.
