          Billy Joe Shaver's Biography

American Texas country western singer, a “new wave” singer-songwriter who rose to prominence in the mid-’70s. A part time poet, he set his sights on Nashville after hearing Waylon Jennings sing.
Moving to Waco with his family at 12, he had early jobs in the sawmill, as a cowboy, carpenter and stage hand. He wrote songs and accumulated rejection slips.
After his initial breakthrough with the sale of his first song, big artists began using his work and he began to get a reputation as a potent new writer in Nashville. Shaver was also a recording artist himself but most of his acclaim comes from the hits he wrote for major country stars.
After losing his wife, Brenda, and his mother to cancer in 1999, Shaver lost his son and longtime guitarist Eddy, who died at age 38 of a heroin overdose on 31 December 2000. Billy Joe Shaver died on 28 October 2020 from a massive stroke at the age of 81 in Waco, Texas.
