          Carl Anton Mense's Biography

German tropical physician, researcher and traveller with a particular interest in Africa. As a physician in Africa, Mense had to deal with diseases which German medical research so far had either scarcely come into contact with, such as Beriberi, trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness), medinawurm (“Guinea worm”) and Frambösie, or for which the causes and origins were so far unknown, for example, malaria or leprosy.
He died on 24 October 1938 in Kassel, aged 77.
