          Daniel Chester French's Biography

          American sculptor perhaps best known for his sculpture of Abraham Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. (1922). Among his other magnificent works of historical fgures are the 1875 rendition of The Minute Man, statues of Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ulysses Grant and the Marquis de Lafayette. French also designed the Pulitzer Prize gold medal in 1917.
          His dad, Henry Flagg French, was a lawyer who became Assistant US Treasury Secretary. Young Daniel studied art in Europe as well as in the US. His family friends, the Emersons (Ralph Waldo Emerson) and Alcotts, encouraged his work. In 1879 his renditon of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s head evoked the response “Yes, that is the face I have” from Emerson himself.
          He died in Stockbridge, MA at age 81 on October 7, 1931.
