          David Querido's Biography

          Dutch journalist, member of a noted Sephardic Jewish family.
          He was the eldest son of the social-democratic diamond cutter Aaron Querido (24 February 1942, A’dam – 18 October 1899, A’dam) and Ester Lopes Dias (18 April 1842, A’dam -20 Nov 1913, Apeldoorn), a house wife that tried to sustain Jewish family life. They married 7 June 1865 in Amsterdam and got several children. His brother Israël was a writer and his brother Emanuel Querido an important publisher of German exile-literature.
          He married on 14 June 1894 Branca Neeter (26 May 1867, A’dam – 6 October 1940, A’dam) in Amsterdam. They got four children of which three died too early: Esther (23 Nov 1895, Amsterdam – 21 May 1943, Sobibor), Aron Barend (13 April 1897, A’dam, 5 Augustus 1897, A’dam) and Elisabeth (22 November 1898, A’dam – 11 June 1943, Sobibor). Esther married Jacob Winkel (1893-1941). Their children Hetty Winkel (1922-1943)and David Max Winkel (1926-1943) were killed. Elisabeth married Benjamin Jas (1893-1943). His grandchildren Eduard Isaäc Jas (1925-1943) and Hester Jas (1938-1943) became also victims of the Holocaust.
          David was murdered 11 February 1944 in Auschwitz, Poland.
