          Ellison Onizuka's Biography

          American astronaut and engineer who successfully flew into space with the Space Shuttle Discovery on STS-51-C. He was the first Asian American and the first person of Japanese ancestry to reach space.
          He imparted his enthusiasm for space in talks to secondary schools, colleges and youth organizations in a trip to Hawaii in 1985, making more than 90 public appearances in two weeks.
          He died in the destruction of the Space Shuttle Challenger, on which he was serving as Mission Specialist for mission STS-51-L. The Challenger lifted off on 28 January 1986 at 11:39 AM EST from Cape Kennedy, Florida. It exploded 1 minute 12 seconds later.
