          Ernst Staengel's Biography

          German chocolate manufacturer, a master confectioner who founded a company in Stuttgart in 1857 and soon became the court supplier to the royal family of Württemberg. In addition to his two sons, Ernst Staengel took his brother-in-law Karl Ziller into the business. From the initial letters of their surnames Staengel and Ziller the brand name Eszet was formed, which was patented in 1904. Ernst Staengel died on 25 April 1915 at age 87. In 1975, the Eszet brand was taken over by the Cologne-based Stollwerck group. Their best known product Eszet-Schnitten (wafers) are thin chocolate bars intended as a topping for bread rolls or bread, today sold under the Sarotti brand.
