          Gerhard Schröder's Biography

          West German politician, a member of the “Christian Democratic Union” (CDU) party, who served in several ministerial positions. These included Federal Minister of the Interior (1953-1961), Foreign Minister (1961-1966) and Minister of Defence (1966-1969). In the 1969 election he ran for President of the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) but was outpolled by Gustav Heinemann.
          He had joined the Nazi Party on 1 April 1933 and also the SA. He worked as a tax lawyer. He left the NSDAP in May 1941. In the same month and perhaps in connection, he married Brigitte Landsberg, who was half-Jewish, with an extraordinary permission by his Armed Forces superiors.
          The Schröders had three children, Christina (born in December 1941), Jan (born 28 May 1943) and Antina (born in October 1945). Jan Schröder became a noted judge.
          Gerhard Schröder died on 31 December 1989 at age 79 in Kampen on the island of Sylt in West Germany.
