          Herbert Kalmbach's Biography

American lawyer. President Nixon’s personal attorney and major fundraiser. He founded a law firm in 1967. By 8/1972, he had collected over $200,000 in payoff money for the Watergate burglars at the request of John Dean. After being indicted, he testified before the Senate Watergate Committee on 7/16/1973; four days later, an oil company admitted to having made a $100,000 corporate contribution to him. He claimed that John Ehrlichman assured him that the Watergate fund collection was legal and his denial was a lie.
On 2/25/1974, he pleaded guilty to charges of federal campaign fund violations, was suspended from the Bar and resigned from the law firm the following day. Given 18 months in jail, he entered prison 7/1/1974.
He testified at the Watergate Cover-up trial 11/12/1974, was released from prison 1/8/1975 (after serving only five months), and was reinstated to the Bar by July 11 that same year.
