American social worker and prominent Theosophist who founded numerous homes for the homeless, charities, hospitals, and women’s shelters between 1887 and 1894. She joined the Theosophical Society in October 1894 and had day schools and boarding schools built in several places in the USA, Cuba, Great Britain and Sweden where she also had a summer school (in Visingsö, her European headquarters).
Tingley’s Theosophical work originated in Point Loma and later became known and famous as Lomaland. She also founded the International Brotherhood Organisation (IBO) and was worldwide engaged for freedom.
Tingley died on 11 July 1929 in Visingsö, Sweden, aged 82.
