          Laura Stephen's Biography

British mentally-disabled daughter of the writer Sir Leslie Stephen, she was the eldest of his five children, and the half-sister of writer Virginia Woolf.
Her mother Minny Thackeray died on 28 November 1875 of eclampsia when Laura was four. Her father remarried and had four more children including Virginia.
In her youth Laura Stephen became increasingly problematic with outbursts of violence and, confined to a separate part of the house, required her own nurse to feed and clothe her. Eventually she was sent away to a governess in Devon in 1886 and eventually an asylum (Earlswood Asylum 1893–1897 in Surrey). The family had little contact with her after that.
Laura Stephen died on 9 February 1945 at age 74. In the 21st Century psychologists have theorised that she had an intellectual disability and autism.
