The son of Belgians from the upper middle class in São Paulo, Matheus Nachterga was three months old when his mother Maria Cecília committed suicide, aged 22. She was a poet and musician and Matheus only found out when he was a teenager that his mother had taken her own life. When he was sixteen, his father revealed the fact to him, presenting a folder with dozens of poems written by Maria Cecília. In 2018, Matheus staged the monologue Concert of Desire, produced by him based on poems written by his mother. According to the actor, she was the inspiration for him to pursue an artistic career.
In 2014, the actor revealed that he is bisexual and that he tried to define himself sexually, but that “it was no use”. According to him, nobody “fits on a shelf” when it comes to sexuality and that everyone has their own definition.
