          Matias Ferreira de Mira's Biography

          Portuguese doctor and politician who published many works in the fields of medical science, didactics and pedagogy, and was an important historian of Portuguese medicine.
          He studied Medicine at the Medical-Surgical School of Lisbon then worked as a doctor in Canha (1899-1910). He later dedicated himself to teaching, he was an assistant (1912-1918) and professor in charge of the Physiological Chemistry course (1918-1944) at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon.
          He was the first director of the Bento da Rocha Cabral Scientific Research Institute.
          He also engaged in political activity: he was a councilor of the Lisbon City Council and deputy during the First Portuguese Republic (elected in 1921 and 1922 by the Santarém constituency, in the lists of the Liberal Republican Party). He began his party activity in the Unionist Party; in 1919 he transitioned to the Liberal Republican Party and, in February 1923, to the Nationalist Republican Party. He would leave the PRN at the end of July 1925, together with Manuel Ferreira da Rocha and Alberto de Moura Pinto, following support for the government of António Maria da Silva.
          Matias Boleto Ferreira de Mira died in Santa Isabel, Lisboa on 7 March 1953 at age 78.
