          Otto Tschumi's Biography

          Swiss painter. He is considered one of the most important exponents of Surrealism in Switzerland.
          Tschumi began to develop his style as a painter in 1920s. He married in 1933 the dancer Beatrice Gutekunst, with whom he remained until his death. From 1936 to 1940 he lived in Paris. Under the influence of Max Ernst , Hans Arp and other Surrealists, he developed at this time to his own design.
          His first exhibition was in 1946, then every few years a large solo exhibition in Switzerland was dedicated to his work. Internationally, he was famous in the 1950s and at the latest in 1960 with his contribution to the Venice Biennale.
          He died 18 February 1985, Bern.
