          Pier Pelicci's Biography

Italian physician and scientist. In late 2000, his work in the field of molecular biology defined a gene that contributes to the aging process. By blocking the action of this gene, which helps regulate biological response to damage from agents like free radicals, Pelicci and his team created a strain of mice that live 30% longer than normal.
Pelicci graduated Summa cum laude from the University of Piragua, Italy, in 1981, and completed his Board in Internal Medicine in 1987. He received his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology during that same year. From 1987-95, he was Chief of the Laboratory of Molecular Biology at Instituto di Clinica Medica I, and in 1996, he became Chairman of the Department of Experimental Oncology at the European Institute of Oncology in Milan, Italy. He has won many awards during his career, including a 1982 Italian prize for young hematologists.
He is married and has two children.
