          Pope John Paul I's Biography

Italian Roman Catholic 263rd Pope who reigned for only a short 33 days in 1978. His reign is among the shortest in papal history, resulting in the most recent year of three popes and the first to occur since 1605. John Paul I remains the most recent Italian-born pope, the last in a succession of such popes that started with Clement VII in 1523.
After serving as a Bishop in 1958, he was named Patriarch of Venice by Pope Paul VI. He was selected as Pope on 26 August 1978.
John Paul had a history of weak health with tuberculosis in his youth. He died on 28 September 1978 at age 65, listed as a heart attack but there were rumors of murder.
On 4 September 2022, he was beatified by Pope Francis.
