          Princess Charlotte Augusta's Biography

British royalty, the only child of King George IV and Princess Caroline of Brunswick. Bright and friendly, she was raised in strict seclusion.
She married Leopold of Saxe-Coburg on 2 May 1816, a love match. In childbirth, due to copious bleeding and stupefied by wine, she and her son both died on 5-6 November 1817 in Westminster. This event changed history by paving the way for Victoria to ascend to the throne.
Charlotte’s death set off tremendous mourning among the British, who had seen her as a sign of hope and a contrast both to her unpopular father and to her grandfather, whom they deemed mad. She had been King George III’s only legitimate grandchild. The King’s unmarried sons thus looked for wives and his fourth son, Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn, fathered the eventual queen, Victoria.
