          Rafael Obregon Loria's Biography

          Costa Rican historian and educator. As he grew up in a home surrounded by books owned by his father, he soon learned many branches of knowledge and human knowledge. He also made studies of primary education in the John Rudin School and in 1931 completed his secondary education at the Liceo de Costa Rica where he earned a Bachelor of Science and Letters. After completing his studies, he returned to the classroom as a teacher and taught lessons in cosmography, mathematics, geography and history in different schools in the country. With the opening of the University of Costa Rica in 1941 he was invited to give lectures at the Department of Geography at the institution of higher education. He was assigned the post of professor at the School of Arts and promoted the creation of the Department of History and Geography, where he was the first director. He was the founder and first director of the School of History and Geography, University of Costa Rica. Mago was awarded the Prize, the highest award of the Costa Rican culture, and in 1979 won the Achilles J. Echeverria National Award in the field of history.
          He died on 25 April 2000
