          Richard Tarnas's Biography

          American psychologist, cultural historian, and astrologer known for his books The Passion of the Western Mind: Understanding the Ideas That Have Shaped Our World View (1991) and Cosmos and Psyche: Intimations of a New World View (2006).
          A graduate of Harvard University (A.B. cum laude, 1972) and Saybrook Institute (PhD, 1976), he was formerly Director of Programs and Education at Esalen Institute. His book The Passion of the Western Mind is a highly acclaimed history of Western thought which became both a bestseller and a widely used text in colleges and universities. The book has been acclaimed by some scholars as the best history of Western thought ever written. He is the founding director of the Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness graduate program at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. He is also on the faculty of the Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara.
          Tarnas’ second book, Prometheus the Awakener (1995), focuses on the astrological properties of the planet Uranus, describing “the uncanny way astrological patterns appear to coincide with events or destiny patterns in the lives of both individuals and societies”.
          His daughter, Becca Tarnas, is an astrologer, artist, writer and editor of Archai: The Journal of Archetypal Cosmology.
