          Schelto Patijn's Biography

          Dutch Labour politician (PvdA).
          He studied law in Utrecht (1954-59) and Washington D.C. (1961-62). Between 1959 and 1961, he was an officer in the army. He made a scientific career at the Europa Institute in Leiden. He dissertated on 19 September 1973 in Utrecht (‘the European Parliament, the fight for its powers’).
          From 28 May 1973 till 16 June 1984, he was member of parliament for the Dutch Labour party. Between 3 July 1973 and 16 July 1979, he was member of the European parliament.
          From December 1978 to August 1979 Patijn was President of a special commission to examine the war past of Willem Aantjes.
          From 16 June 1984 until 1 June 1994, he was Queen’s Commissioner in the Province of South Holland. From 1 June 1994 until 1 January 2001 he was mayor of Amsterdam.
          He married Elisabeth Stroink on 12 July 1961. The couple had three children.
          He died 15 July 2007.
