French writer.
Eugène Roy is a true autodidact. In July 1854 he engages and is incorporated in the 4th regiment of hunters with horse. He returns to the civil life in February 1860 and turns over in its native Périgord.
He makes a success of its entrance examination in the Contributions and becomes supernumerary tax collector of the Treasury of Périgeux and becomes notable among the notable ones.
In 1874, he has a child with Marie Peyronnet (the Dame des Postes) whom he will civilly marry in 1877, creating the scandal of the scandals. From this union, are born three.
To marry civilly under the Empire was a republican act, a civic act of courage. Sanctioned and transferred in the Rhône delta, he resigns and returns in Montignac as tax collector again in 1880.Then transferred in Bordeaux, it remains there until 1892 before returning as tax collector in Hautefort.
Arrived in his fifties, he starts to write novels. He speaks there about the poor people, the peasants, the declining nobility, its Périgord and its people with his heart of convinced republican. He is the author of the quite famous “Jacquou le Croquant “, which has been adaptated for television, and was called by one of literary criticisms of the time : the “Balzac périgourdin”.
Eugène Le Roy died in Montignac (Dordogne) on 6 May 1907 at the age of 71 years.
