          Vladimir Putin's Biography

Vladimir Putin, the current President of Russia, has a long career in politics and intelligence. He’s been serving as President since 2012, although he also held the position from 1999 to 2008. Putin has also served as Prime Minister twice. He is the second-longest current serving European president, following Alexander Lukashenko. Putin took over as President from Boris Yeltsin in March 2000 after Yeltsin’s resignation due to health issues and political challenges.

Born to factory workers in Leningrad, Putin was raised in a communal apartment. His father died in 1999 and his mother six months earlier. Putin lost his two brothers at a young age, and despite Communist law, he was baptized in the Russian Orthodox faith.

Putin studied law at Leningrad University, where one of his teachers was Anatoli Sobchak, a reformer. After graduating in 1975, he spent 15 years as a KGB agent, mainly in East Germany. In 1990, Putin returned to Leningrad State University and also joined the administration of then-mayor of Leningrad-St. Petersburg, Sobchak. After Sobchak’s defeat in 1996, Putin moved to Moscow and quickly rose to become head of the FSB, (Federal Security Bureau) a successor to the KGB.

The ex-KGB spy once attempted to westernize the Soviet Union but has since championed a new Russia. He pledged to annihilate the rebels of Chechnya and combat terrorism, which boosted his career. Putin has always been private, avoiding publicity for his family. He and his wife, Lyudmila, divorced in 2014. Putin is fluent in English and German, is fond of sports, and has been practicing samba (a Russian style of self-defense) and judo since he was 11.

Putin’s first year as President was marked by a successful takeover of the media, leading to criticisms of reduced democracy in Russia. During his fourth term, he launched a large invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, leading to international condemnation and increased sanctions. In March 2023, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Putin relating to allegations of illegal child abductions during the war.
