          Walther Schönfeld's Biography

          German dermatologist who worked in the areas of skin tuberculosis, occupational dermatoses and herpes diseases as well as the treatment of venereal diseases such as syphilis and gonorrhea. He also worked as a historian of medicine of the early modern period. On his initiative, the Institute for the History of Medicine was established at the University of Heidelberg, whose first director in 1961 was Heinrich Schipperges, followed by Wolfgang U. Eckart in 1992.
          He died on 26 March 1977 in Heidelberg, aged 88.
