          Willem Boekhoudt's Biography

          Dutch minister in the Dutch Reformed Church, who was posted in Suriname from 1845 to 1849. Later he became a minister in Winschoten, where he gave catechism to, among others, the later writer Willem Paap. He married in 1850 in Scheemda and after the death of his wife again in 1856 in Zuidbroek.
          Boekhoudt published a diary written while travelling through parts of Germany, Switzerland and Paris (1859). He published his notes on Suriname in 1874 as From my past, which is regarded as an important historical source on the country.
          He died in Winschoten on 22 October 1894 at age 72.
