          William Floyd Weld's Biography

American politician, the Governor of Massachusetts after George Dukakis, finally balancing the budget and doing so without raising taxes. His cuts were not popular to everyone, as he trimmed Medicaid and welfare benefits and was less lenient with Emergency Aid claims to the elderly and kids.
As an attorney working for a firm in 1971-’81, he was assistant counsel on the Watergate inquiry. He served as a State Representative 1981-’86 and Assistant U.S. Attorney General 1986-’88. Rising in the Republican Party, he was sworn in as Governor in January 1991.
On 11/29/1995, Weld announced that he would challenge Dem. Senator John Kerry the following year. They are both Ivy League polished men of privilege, both pro-choice. Weld is tough on crime and known for putting a cap on benefits. He and Newt Gingrich disagree on some issues.
Weld turned over his job as Governor to Paul Celucci, his Lieutenant-Governor, on 7/29/1997, in order, as a private citizen, to apply for the job of U.S. Ambassador to Mexico.
Weld is married to Susan Roosevelt.
